Shrek 4-D is a short film and simulator ride that uses motion seats, water sprays, and other physical effects timed to an animated 4D movie from the Shrek series. The experience currently operates at Universal Studios Japan and Universal Studios Singapore, and was previously available at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Florida. Taking place between the first Shrek film and Shrek 2, the story has Shrek and Donkey trying to rescue Princess Fiona from the ghost of Lord Farquaad.
The plot begins with Shrek and Fiona searching for the Honeymoon Hotel, with Donkey tagging along as a self-appointed escort. Thelonious suddenly snatches Fiona, prompting Shrek and Donkey to chase after him. While searching a graveyard, Lord Farquaad’s ghost brings a stone statue of Dragon to life, ordering it to kill the pair. The real Dragon arrives to help, and the stone dragon eventually loses its wings against a hole’s walls and sinks into the water. Farquaad then sends Fiona down a river on a raft toward a waterfall, hoping she will die so he can rule the underworld with her. Fiona breaks free, knees Thelonious in the groin, and he falls off. Shrek and Donkey reach her just before the raft goes over the falls, but all four end up plunging down. Dragon saves them, blasts Farquaad with fire, and destroys him again. Dragon then flies Shrek and Fiona to the hotel, while she and Donkey ride off to make waffles in celebration. Shrek and Fiona’s honeymoon is interrupted by fairy-tale creatures, but they join in the fun. Shrek pops a champagne cork, which sends Tinker-Bell flying out of the frame.
The cast includes Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, John Lithgow as Lord Farquaad, Conrad Vernon as Gingy, Cody Cameron as Pinocchio and the Three Little Pigs, Christopher Knights as Thelonious and the Three Blind Mice, and Chris Miller as the Magic Mirror.
The attraction was announced for Universal Studios Florida and Universal Studios Hollywood in May 2002. Florida closed Alfred Hitchcock: The Art of Making Movies to make room for it, while The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera was replaced by Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast. The first park to show the film was Universal Studios Hollywood on May 23, 2003, followed by Universal Studios Florida and Japan in June of the same year. In 2010, the attraction opened with Universal Studios Singapore in the Shrek-themed Far Far Away area. Outside Universal parks, the film was shown at Movie Park Germany from May 2008 until July 2011, and at Warner Bros. Movie World in Australia from September 2005 until August 2010.
